ACETONITRILE (METHYL CYANIDE) Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics

Acetonitrile, also known as methyl cyanide or cyanomethane, is a colorless, volatile liquid with the chemical formula CH3CN widely used as a solvent in pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical synthesis, and analytical chromatography. It is also used in the production of plastics, rubber products, and batteries and is commonly generated as a byproduct of acrylonitrile production. Acetonitrile is highly flammable and may cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. In systems containing this solvent, O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components should be evaluated for chemical compatibility. Proper handling, storage, ventilation, and protective practices are essential.
