Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, is a white crystalline compound with the chemical formula C6H8O6. It is used as a dietary supplement, antioxidant, and in the food industry as a preservative. Ascorbic acid is also employed in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is relatively non-toxic but can cause skin and eye irritation upon contact.
