ASTM OIL NO. 4 Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
ASTM Oil No. 4, also known as ASTM Reference Oil No. 4 or IRM 903 test oil, is a standardized petroleum-based reference fluid developed under ASTM International testing protocols. This calibration oil is widely used in laboratory evaluations to measure changes in volume, hardness, tensile strength, and other physical properties of rubber materials. In chemical compatibility testing, ASTM Oil No. 4 is commonly used to assess how O-rings and gaskets respond to aggressive hydrocarbon exposure. Because it is a highly aromatic mineral oil formulation, certain rubber compounds may experience significant swelling. Proper handling, controlled storage, and appropriate PPE are recommended when performing compatibility testing on O-rings, rubber seals, and gaskets.
