BROMOMETHANE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Bromomethane, commonly known as methyl bromide or CH3Br, is a colorless, volatile gas with a faintly sweet odor used as a fumigant and chemical intermediate in organic synthesis. Historically applied in agricultural soil treatment and structural pest control, methyl bromide is highly toxic and readily absorbed through inhalation. In chemical compatibility evaluations, bromomethane exposure should be carefully reviewed for rubber O-rings and gaskets, as halogenated compounds can cause swelling, embrittlement, or degradation in certain rubber materials. Because CH3Br presents serious health hazards, including neurological and respiratory effects, strict handling procedures, sealed systems, proper storage, ventilation, and PPE are critical to protect personnel and maintain reliable performance of O-rings, rubber seals, and gaskets.
