CARBON MONOXIDE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Carbon monoxide, also known as CO or carbon oxide, is a colorless, odorless gas generated through incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, and coal. It is also used as a feedstock in certain industrial synthesis processes. In chemical compatibility evaluations, carbon monoxide exposure should be reviewed for rubber O-rings and gaskets used in sealed systems, particularly under pressure or elevated temperatures. While CO is not corrosive in dry conditions, system design and material selection remain important. Because carbon monoxide is highly toxic and can cause serious health effects through inhalation, proper ventilation, gas detection, storage controls, and PPE are critical to protect personnel and ensure reliable performance of O-rings, rubber seals, and gaskets.
