CELLOSOLVE BUTYL Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Cellosolve butyl, also known as butyl Cellosolve, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, or 2-butoxyethanol, is a colorless solvent with a mild odor and the chemical formula C6H14O2. This glycol ether is widely used in paints, coatings, cleaners, and adhesives due to its strong solvency and surface wetting properties. In chemical compatibility evaluations, butyl Cellosolve exposure should be assessed for rubber O-rings and gaskets, as glycol ether solvents may cause swelling or softening in certain rubber materials. Although considered moderate in toxicity, 2-butoxyethanol can cause skin and respiratory irritation, making proper storage, ventilation, PPE, and material selection important to maintain safe performance of O-rings, rubber seals, and gaskets.
