Dimethyl sulfoxide, commonly known as DMSO or methyl sulfoxide, is a colorless liquid with a mild odor and the chemical formula C2H6OS that is widely used as a high polarity solvent in chemical processing and manufacturing. Although considered relatively low in acute toxicity, DMSO can cause skin and respiratory irritation and may enhance absorption of other chemicals through the skin. In fluid systems, O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components should be evaluated for compatibility, as dimethyl sulfoxide can affect certain rubber materials. Proper handling and storage are recommended.
