Methyl 2-pyrrolidone, commonly known as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or NMP, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with the chemical formula C5H9NO widely used as a powerful solvent for polymers, resins, coatings, and electronic materials. It is also used as a chemical intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals and in industrial cleaning formulations. Exposure to NMP may cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation. In systems containing this solvent, O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components should be evaluated for chemical compatibility, as strong solvents can affect certain rubber materials. Proper handling, storage, ventilation, and protective measures are recommended.
