Methyl acetate, also known as acetic acid methyl ester or methyl ethanoate with the formula C3H6O2, is a colorless, volatile solvent with a light fruity odor used in coatings, adhesives, inks, and chemical synthesis. It is also used in pharmaceutical processing and flavor applications. In industrial equipment, methyl acetate may contact O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components, so compatibility should be evaluated to prevent swelling or material degradation. Because methyl acetate is highly flammable and may irritate skin or lungs, proper storage, ventilation, handling procedures, and PPE are recommended.
