Phosphorous Trichloride Acid / Phosphorus Trichloride Acid (PCl₃) Rubber O-Rings & Gasket Compatibility
Phosphorus trichloride, identified by the formula PCl3, is a volatile, fuming liquid that appears colorless to faint yellow and emits a sharp, penetrating odor. Although sometimes mistakenly referred to as an acid, PCl3 is a reactive phosphorus halide that readily hydrolyzes in the presence of moisture. It is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of organophosphorus compounds, including agricultural chemicals, plasticizers, flame retardants, and various specialty additives. Because of its strong reactivity, phosphorus trichloride plays a critical role in chlorination and substitution reactions within industrial synthesis pathways. However, this same reactivity also makes it hazardous. Contact with water can generate corrosive hydrogen chloride vapors and phosphorus-containing acids, increasing both occupational and environmental risks. Exposure to PCl3 may cause severe skin and eye burns, respiratory injury, and systemic toxicity. Safe handling requires chemical resistant gloves, splash goggles, face protection, and properly engineered ventilation or fume extraction systems. Storage should be in tightly sealed, corrosion resistant containers kept dry and isolated from moisture, strong bases, oxidizers, and incompatible materials. In the event of a release, rapid containment, neutralization, and controlled cleanup are essential. Due to its corrosive and toxic nature, strict safety procedures and regulatory compliance are mandatory when working with phosphorus trichloride.
