Toluene diisocyanate, commonly abbreviated as TDI, is an aromatic diisocyanate with the chemical formula C9H6N2O2. It typically appears as a colorless to light yellow liquid and serves as a key building block in polyurethane chemistry. Due to its highly reactive isocyanate groups, TDI readily reacts with polyols to form flexible or rigid polyurethane materials. TDI is widely used in the production of polyurethane foams found in furniture cushioning, automotive seating, insulation panels, sealants, coatings, adhesives, and elastomeric components. Its controlled reactivity allows manufacturers to tailor mechanical properties such as flexibility, density, and durability. As a result, toluene diisocyanate plays a central role in the fabrication of both consumer and industrial polyurethane products. Because TDI is highly toxic and can cause serious respiratory sensitization, skin irritation, and other health effects, strict safety precautions are required. Exposure may occur through inhalation of vapors or aerosols and through skin contact.
