Butyl Mercaptan (1-Butanethiol, n-Butyl Mercaptan) Rubber O-Rings & Gasket
Butyl mercaptan, also known as butanethiol, is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the formula C4H10S. This clear to light yellow liquid is characterized by an extremely strong, penetrating odor, which makes it particularly useful as an odorant in natural gas and other fuel gases to aid in leak detection. Even at very low concentrations, its distinctive smell allows for rapid identification of escaping gas. In addition to its role as a gas warning agent, butyl mercaptan is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of various sulfur-based organic compounds. It also has applications within the rubber industry, where thiol chemistry can contribute to specific formulation or processing characteristics in elastomer systems. Because butyl mercaptan is highly flammable and may cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, careful storage and handling are critical. It should be kept in tightly sealed containers away from ignition sources and used in well-ventilated areas. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, should be worn to minimize exposure and ensure safe industrial use.
