Its distinctive smell allows leaks to be detected quickly, even at very low concentrations. Beyond its use in fuel gas odorization, tertiary butyl mercaptan serves as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of specialty sulfur-containing organic compounds. It is also utilized in certain rubber and elastomer applications, where thiol chemistry can influence processing or formulation characteristics. Due to its high flammability and potential to cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, strict safety procedures are required when handling TBM. Storage in tightly sealed containers away from heat and ignition sources is essential.
