FURFURALDEHYDE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Furfural, also called furaldehyde and identified by the formula C5H4O2, is a colorless to yellow organic liquid with a mild odor used as a solvent, in resin production, and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. In processing equipment, furfural may contact O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components, so chemical compatibility should be reviewed to reduce swelling or material degradation. While generally considered relatively low in toxicity, exposure can irritate skin and the respiratory tract. Proper storage, safe handling procedures, and appropriate PPE are recommended.
