MERCAPTOBENZOTHIAZOLE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Mercaptobenzothiazole, commonly abbreviated as MBT and identified by the formula C7H5NS2, is a white to pale yellow crystalline compound widely used as a vulcanization accelerator in rubber manufacturing. It promotes cross linking during curing to improve the strength and elasticity of rubber materials. MBT is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in lubricants and metalworking fluids. In systems containing O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components, compatibility should be evaluated to prevent material degradation. Exposure may irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system, so proper handling, storage, and PPE are recommended.
