Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, commonly abbreviated as MEKP with the formula C8H16O4, is a colorless to pale yellow organic peroxide used as a catalyst and curing agent in polyester resins and fiberglass reinforced plastics. It is also used in coatings, adhesives, and sealant systems to promote polymer cross linking. In equipment where it contacts O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components, compatibility should be evaluated to prevent degradation. MEKP is highly reactive and can decompose explosively, so strict storage, ventilation, handling procedures, and appropriate PPE are essential.
