T-Butyl Catechol (TBC, 4-tert-Butylcatechol) Rubber O-Rings & Gasket Compatibility

Tert-Butyl catechol, commonly abbreviated as TBC, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C10H14O2 that appears as a white to light brown crystalline solid. It functions primarily as a polymerization inhibitor and antioxidant in industrial chemical processes. By suppressing unwanted free radical reactions, TBC helps maintain the stability of reactive monomers during storage and transportation. One of its most important applications is preventing premature polymerization of monomers such as butadiene, styrene, and vinyl acetate. Without stabilizers like tert-butyl catechol, these materials can polymerize unintentionally, leading to safety hazards, product loss, or equipment fouling. TBC is also incorporated into certain resin systems, coatings, and adhesive formulations where oxidative stability is required to maintain product performance and shelf life. Although effective at low concentrations, proper handling and storage of tert-butyl catechol are necessary to protect both product integrity and worker safety. Exposure through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact may present health risks, so appropriate ventilation and personal protective equipment are recommended. When used according to established safety procedures, TBC remains a critical stabilizing agent in the safe processing and storage of reactive monomers and polymer systems.
