This clear to slightly yellow liquid is widely used as an odorant in natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas systems so leaks can be quickly detected. TBM is also used as a chemical intermediate in specialty chemical production. In systems containing TBM, O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components should be evaluated for compatibility, as sulfur compounds can affect certain rubber materials.
