FFKM vs FKM (Viton™)
When selecting sealing materials for demanding applications, FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) and FKM (fluoroelastomer, commonly known as Viton®) are two of the most widely used options. Both materials offer strong chemical resistance and high temperature capability, but they differ significantly in performance limits, cost, and application suitability.
FKM (Viton®) O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts are commonly used in applications involving oils, fuels, and moderate chemical exposure, with excellent performance in temperatures up to approximately 437°F (225°C). There are several specialized FKM types, including GLT, GFLT, XLT (low temperature grades), and ETP (extreme chemical resistance grades), which expand the usable range of FKM (Viton®) materials for more demanding environments.
However, for the most aggressive conditions, FFKM O-rings, gaskets, custom parts, and tubes provide the highest level of chemical resistance and thermal stability available in elastomers. At Canyon Components, Canrez® FFKM is engineered to outperform standard FKM (Viton®) materials in extreme environments, while offering competitive pricing and strong availability compared to Kalrez® and Chemraz®.
Understanding the differences between FFKM and FKM (Viton®) is critical to selecting the right material for your application, balancing performance requirements with cost considerations.
Common names include: FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer), FKM (Fluoroelastomer, Viton®), Fluoropolymer Elastomers. Trade names: Canrez®, Kalrez®, Chemraz®, Viton®, Fluorel®, Technoflon®, Dai-El®.

Features of FFKM vs FKM (Viton®) O-Rings, Gaskets, & Custom Parts
- FFKM O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts provide the highest level of chemical resistance, including compatibility with aggressive acids, solvents, and reactive chemicals
- FKM (Viton®) O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts offer excellent resistance to oils, fuels, and many hydrocarbons, making them ideal for general industrial use
- FFKM perfluoroelastomer materials offer superior high temperature performance, often exceeding 572°F (300°C), while FKM (Viton®) typically performs up to ~437°F (225°C)
- FKM (Viton®) specialty grades such as GLT, GFLT, and XLT provide improved low temperature flexibility, while ETP grades enhance chemical resistance
- FFKM O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts maintain low compression set and long-term sealing performance in extreme environments
- FKM (Viton®) O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts provide a cost-effective solution for applications that do not require full FFKM performance
- Canrez® FFKM offers a high-performance alternative with strong availability and competitive pricing compared to Kalrez® and Chemraz®
- Both FFKM and FKM (Viton®) materials are available in standard sizes and custom molded geometries, including O-rings, gaskets, and complex parts
Limitations of FFKM vs FKM (Viton®) O-Rings, Gaskets, & Custom Parts
- FFKM O-rings, gaskets, and custom parts have a higher upfront cost compared to FKM (Viton®) materials
- FKM (Viton®) materials have limitations in extreme chemical environments, particularly with strong acids, amines, and certain solvents
- FKM (Viton®) materials generally have lower maximum temperature capability compared to FFKM
- FFKM materials may be over-specified for less aggressive applications, where FKM (Viton®) provides sufficient performance at a lower cost
- Both materials require proper compound selection, as performance varies widely between formulations
