What are LNG & CNG Sealing Materials?
LNG and CNG sealing materials are engineered elastomers and thermoplastics specifically designed to maintain sealing performance in natural gas handling systems exposed to low temperatures, high pressures, fuel gases, and rapid decompression conditions. These materials are commonly used in O-rings, gaskets, valve seats, backup rings, custom molded parts, cryogenic seals, compressor seals, and fuel transfer system components.
Liquefied natural gas systems often operate at cryogenic temperatures that place significant stress on elastomeric materials due to thermal contraction and brittleness concerns. Compressed natural gas systems commonly expose seals to extremely high pressures and rapid gas decompression conditions that can damage conventional sealing materials.
Common Considerations
Low Temperature Flexibility
LNG systems operate at extremely low cryogenic temperatures that can cause standard elastomers to harden or crack. Specialized low temperature materials are required to maintain flexibility and sealing performance under cryogenic conditions.
Explosive Decompression Resistance
CNG systems commonly operate under high pressure conditions where gases can permeate into elastomeric materials. During rapid decompression, trapped gas can expand internally and damage the seal. AED and RGD resistant materials are commonly required for these environments.
Fuel Compatibility
Natural gas systems may expose seals to hydrocarbons, fuel additives, oils, and process contaminants. Proper material compatibility is critical for preventing swelling, hardening, cracking, or premature seal degradation.
Compression Set Resistance

NORSOK M-710 is commonly referenced for elastomer materials used in high-pressure oil and gas applications involving explosive decompression resistance. Many LNG and CNG systems require materials capable of passing rapid gas decompression testing.
NACE TM0297
NACE TM0297 testing evaluates elastomer resistance to rapid gas decompression and is frequently used for high-pressure gas sealing systems.
ASTM D2000
ASTM D2000 provides a classification system for elastomer materials based on heat resistance, oil resistance, and physical properties. Many industrial LNG and CNG sealing materials are specified according to ASTM D2000 requirements.
