Viton™ – High Pressure Fluorocarbon Elastomers
Viton™ high pressure fluorocarbon elastomers are engineered for sealing applications where elevated pressures, aggressive fluids, and demanding mechanical conditions push standard elastomers beyond their limits. These materials are most commonly supplied in 85 Shore A and higher durometers, delivering increased modulus, improved extrusion resistance, and enhanced sealing stability in both static and dynamic applications.
Viton™ high pressure O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts are widely used in oil and gas, chemical processing, energy, and industrial systems where seals must withstand high differential pressures, pressure cycling, and exposure to hydrocarbons, fuels, and sour service environments. When properly specified, these compounds provide long-term sealing reliability while meeting the stringent requirements of NORSOK and NACE service.
The engineers and consultants at Canyon Components work closely with customers to select the optimal Viton™ high pressure compound, balancing durometer, groove design, backup ring strategy, and chemical compatibility. - Viton™ high pressure compounds offer excellent extrusion resistance compared to softer elastomers
- Viton™ high pressure O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts maintain sealing integrity under high differential pressure
- Viton™ high pressure compounds exhibit excellent resistance to fuels, oils, lubricants, and hydrocarbon fluids
- Viton™ high pressure O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts provide strong mechanical strength and low compression set
- Viton™ high pressure compounds are compatible with anti-extrusion backup rings for extreme pressure service
- Viton™ high pressure materials are available in formulations suitable for NORSOK and NACE CO2 and H2S sour gas applications
Limitations of Viton™ High Pressure Compounds
- Viton™ high pressure O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts have poor resistance to hot water and superheated steam
- Depending on the blend, Viton™ high pressure compounds are not recommended for strong amines, ketones, or highly polar solvents
- Depending on the blend, Viton™ high pressure compounds are not compatible with ammonia gas or strong inorganic bases
- Depending on the blend, Viton™ high pressure O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts typically have a service temperature range of -15°F to 437°F (-26°C to 225°C), depending on compound and application. However, there are some extreme low temperature Viton™ materials that can stretch the low temperature performance down to -78°F (-26°C)
- Extremely high pressures may still require backup rings or alternative seal geometries
