Limitations of Polyurethane Rollers for Industrial & Conveyor Systems
- Standard polyurethane materials generally have lower high temperature resistance compared to Silicone, FKM, or specialty high temperature elastomers
- Polyurethane materials may hydrolyze in prolonged hot water or steam exposure unless hydrolysis resistant grades are selected
- Some polyurethane rollers may exhibit increased rolling resistance or friction in certain applications compared to harder engineered plastics
- Low temperature flexibility may be more limited than Silicone or specialty low temperature elastomers in cold operating environments
- UV exposure and outdoor weathering may reduce service life unless specialized weather resistant polyurethane compounds are used
- Improper bonding preparation between the roller core and polyurethane covering can reduce long term performance in demanding applications
- Certain high speed applications may require specialized balancing, precision machining, or alternative material selections depending on rotational loads
