Limitations of Polyurethane Gaskets for Industrial Sealing Applications
- Standard polyurethane materials generally have lower high temperature resistance than FKM, FFKM, Silicone, or PTFE based gasket materials
- Long-term steam exposure and high temperature moisture conditions may reduce service life unless hydrolysis resistant grades are selected
- Low temperature flexibility may be more limited than Silicone or specialty low temperature elastomers
- Outdoor UV exposure may affect polyurethane materials unless weather resistant formulations are selected
- Some polyurethane gasket materials may exhibit higher friction compared to PTFE or engineered plastic sealing materials
- Very high flange loading or aggressive thermal cycling conditions may require alternative gasket material technologies depending on operating conditions
