Viton™ for the EMI and RFI Shielding Industry
Viton™ (FKM) fluorocarbon elastomers are used in the EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) shielding industry for manufacturing O-rings, gaskets, seals, and custom molded parts that must perform reliably in electrically sensitive, chemically aggressive, and thermally demanding environments. EMI and RFI shielding systems often operate in harsh conditions that include exposure to fuels, oils, solvents, elevated temperatures, and outdoor environments, making material durability just as critical as electrical performance.
Viton™ O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts provide excellent resistance to fuels, oils, lubricants, and many chemicals while maintaining stable mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. In EMI and RFI shielding applications, Viton™ is frequently used as the elastomeric base material for conductive gaskets, environmental seals, and hybrid shielding components where long-term compression set resistance, chemical stability, and environmental sealing are required.
The engineers and consultants at Canyon Components work closely with customers designing EMI and RFI shielding systems to ensure Viton™ is applied correctly as part of a complete shielding and sealing solution. What Are EMI and RFI Shielding Grade Materials?
EMI and RFI shielding grade materials are components specifically designed to attenuate electromagnetic and radio frequency energy while also providing mechanical sealing and environmental protection. In many shielding systems, elastomers serve a dual role: maintaining enclosure integrity while supporting conductive elements that provide grounding and shielding continuity.
Common Considerations for EMI/RFI Shielding Elastomers
- Environmental Sealing: Elastomers must prevent ingress of dust, moisture, and contaminants that can degrade shielding performance
- Compression Set Resistance: Long-term compression stability is critical to maintaining consistent contact pressure in shielding gaskets
- Chemical Resistance: Materials must withstand oils, fuels, solvents, and cleaning agents used in industrial and defense environments
- Thermal Stability: Elastomers must perform under thermal cycling without hardening or cracking
- Compatibility with Conductive Media: Materials must bond or integrate effectively with conductive fillers, meshes, or coatings
- Traceability: Materials should be traceable for quality assurance and regulated applications
Key Standards Relevant to EMI and RFI Shielding Applications
- MIL-DTL-83528 (Shielding Gaskets): This specification covers electrically conductive elastomer gaskets used for EMI/RFI shielding. Viton™ compounds may be used as environmental sealing elements within systems designed to meet this specification.
- Environmental and Mechanical Standards: EMI/RFI shielding systems must also meet environmental durability requirements for vibration, shock, temperature cycling, and chemical exposure—areas where Viton™ provides significant value.
