What Are UL Certified Elastomer Materials?
UL Certified elastomer materials are compounds that have been evaluated and recognized by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for compliance with specific safety and performance standards. In sealing applications, UL certification is most often associated with flammability ratings, electrical safety considerations, and material behavior under heat exposure.
Common Considerations for UL Certified Elastomers
- Flammability Performance: Materials are evaluated for ignition resistance, burn rate, and self-extinguishing behavior
- Material Thickness and Geometry: UL recognition is specific to tested thicknesses and part configurations
- Electrical Safety: Materials used in electrical equipment must not compromise insulation or enclosure integrity
- Thermal Stability: Elastomers must maintain performance when exposed to elevated temperatures
- Documentation and Traceability: UL-recognized materials require controlled documentation and labeling
- Application-Specific Scope: UL certification applies only within defined use conditions and environments
Key UL Standards Relevant to Viton™
- UL 94 – Flammability of Plastic Materials: UL 94 classifies materials based on their flammability characteristics. Certain Viton™ compounds may achieve UL 94 V-0, V-1, or V-2 ratings, depending on formulation and thickness, making them suitable for fire-sensitive applications.
- UL Recognized Components: UL recognition applies to specific materials or components used within certified assemblies. Viton™ compounds may be specified as part of UL-recognized sealing systems in electrical or industrial equipment.
- Industry-Specific UL Requirements: Different industries apply UL standards differently, including electrical equipment, industrial controls, appliances, and energy systems. Proper material selection is critical to ensure compliance.
- UL 157: UL 157 covers gaskets and seals used in electrical equipment, focusing on material performance, aging resistance, and electrical safety considerations. Elastomer O-rings and gaskets meeting UL 157 requirements are commonly used in enclosures and industrial assemblies.
