AMS-Spec Viton™ for the Military and Aerospace Industry
AMS-Spec Viton™ (FKM) fluorocarbon elastomers are widely used in the military and aerospace industry for manufacturing O-rings, gaskets, seals, and custom molded parts that must meet strict aerospace material controls, performance consistency, and traceability requirements. AMS (Aerospace Material Specification) standards govern the formulation, processing, and qualification of elastomeric materials used in aircraft, defense systems, and aerospace equipment where reliability and repeatability are critical.
AMS-qualified Viton™ O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded parts are commonly specified for aircraft fuel systems, hydraulic systems, environmental control systems, propulsion support hardware, and ground support equipment. These materials provide excellent resistance to aviation fuels, hydraulic fluids, lubricants, and environmental exposure while maintaining mechanical stability under temperature extremes, vibration, and pressure cycling.
Canyon Components supports aerospace OEMs, defense contractors, and Tier-1 suppliers with AMS-compliant Viton™ materials, offering controlled compounds, full documentation, and material traceability. What Are AMS-Spec Elastomer Materials?
AMS-Spec elastomer materials are sealing compounds governed by Aerospace Material Specifications that define requirements for composition, processing, performance, and quality control. Unlike general industrial elastomers, AMS materials are produced to meet aerospace-specific expectations for consistency, traceability, and qualification.
Common Considerations for AMS-Spec Elastomers
- Material Control: Strict control of formulation, curing, and processing parameters
- Traceability: Lot-level traceability from raw material through finished part
- Environmental Resistance: Performance under fuels, hydraulic fluids, thermal cycling, and vibration
- Repeatability: Consistent mechanical and chemical properties across production batches
- Documentation: Certificates of Conformance, material certifications, and test reports are typically required
- Qualification: Materials may undergo extensive validation before being approved for flight or defense use
Key AMS Standards Relevant to Viton™ in Aerospace
- AMS (Aerospace Material Specifications): AMS documents define elastomer requirements for aerospace applications, including physical properties, heat aging, fluid resistance, and compression set. Viton™ compounds qualified to AMS specifications are widely used for aerospace sealing components.
- AS (Aerospace Standards): AS standards define dimensional and application requirements for aerospace seals, including O-rings and gaskets produced from AMS-qualified materials.
- Qualification and Environmental Testing: AMS-Spec Viton™ materials may be subjected to thermal aging, fuel immersion, hydraulic fluid exposure, vibration testing, and altitude simulation to ensure long-term reliability.
