Parker Hannifin Butyl (IIR) Elastomers
Parker Hannifin Butyl elastomer materials are designed for sealing applications requiring excellent gas impermeability, strong chemical resistance, and reliable performance in water, steam, brake fluid, and vacuum environments. Butyl rubber, also known as IIR or Isobutylene Isoprene rubber, is commonly used in O-rings, gaskets, diaphragms, valve seals, vacuum seals, and custom molded rubber parts exposed to gases, moisture, and aggressive polar media. These materials are widely specified in vacuum systems, brake systems, chemical processing equipment, water handling systems, and industrial sealing applications requiring low gas permeability.
Canyon Components supplies high quality equivalents to many Parker Butyl elastomer compounds used throughout industrial and fluid sealing systems. Our team supports replacement O-rings, gaskets, diaphragms, and custom molded sealing components manufactured from Butyl rubber compounds for vacuum systems, chemical handling systems, and water based sealing applications. We also provide engineering support for compatibility analysis, compression set evaluation, and sealing system optimization.

Features of Parker Hannifin Butyl Materials
- Butyl elastomer compounds provide extremely low gas permeability compared to many other industrial elastomers
- Butyl compounds provide strong resistance to water, steam, brake fluids, and many polar chemical environments
- Butyl rubber provides good vibration damping and low compression set characteristics in many sealing applications
- These materials are frequently specified for vacuum systems and gas sealing applications where leakage reduction is critical
- Certain Butyl compounds provide strong resistance to glycol based hydraulic fluids and phosphate ester fluids
- Canyon Components supplies equivalent Butyl sealing materials with strong availability, engineering support, and rapid lead times
Limitations of Parker Hannifin Butyl Materials
- Butyl rubber has poor compatibility with petroleum oils, fuels, and hydrocarbon based lubricants
- These compounds generally provide lower abrasion resistance compared to HNBR or polyurethane materials
- Butyl elastomers may not perform well in applications involving aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbons
- Dynamic sealing applications involving aggressive wear conditions may require more mechanically durable elastomers
- Not all Butyl compounds are suitable for continuous exposure to aggressive solvents or fuel systems

Industrial Applications for Parker Butyl Materials
Butyl elastomer materials are used in systems where low gas permeability, moisture resistance, and chemical compatibility are critical. These compounds are commonly installed in vacuum systems, brake systems, chemical handling systems, water treatment systems, pharmaceutical equipment, and industrial fluid handling applications. Material selection depends on operating temperature, fluid compatibility, pressure conditions, gas exposure, and sealing geometry.
Canyon Components supports industrial manufacturers, vacuum system OEMs, chemical processing companies, and fluid handling equipment manufacturers with Parker equivalent Butyl O-rings, gaskets, and custom molded sealing components. Parker material information and Butyl compound references can be found in the Parker material offering guide and Parker O-Ring Handbook.
Vacuum Sealing Systems
Butyl compounds are commonly used in vacuum applications due to their excellent resistance to gas permeation and low leakage characteristics.
Brake Fluid Systems
IIR elastomers provide strong compatibility with glycol based brake fluids used in automotive and industrial hydraulic brake systems.
Water and Steam Systems
Butyl rubber compounds are frequently used in water handling and moderate steam applications requiring moisture resistance and sealing stability.
Chemical Processing Equipment
Certain Butyl compounds provide excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and polar solvents used in industrial chemical systems.
Pharmaceutical and Laboratory Equipment
Low permeability Butyl compounds are commonly used in laboratory systems and pharmaceutical applications requiring reliable sealing performance.
